The 3 Mistakes That Kept Me Stuck (and the Simple Fix)
My life now is exactly what I was dreaming of a few years ago, but at the time, my life looked nothing like it does now.
Confession time: When I first tried to start my blog, I was a complete mess.
I did what so many of us do, I decided to pursue a career I thought would make money, not one I actually had interest in, so I headed off to nursing school in Lincoln, Nebraska.
It didn’t take me long to realize I hated it, but the student loan debt had already piled up. I was burnt out and drowning in credit card debt. My husband and I had just gotten married, so I felt like I had to stick with it for him, and our future life together, but inside, I remember feeling like my whole life was falling apart, that I was stuck on a path I didn't choose, living for a weekend that was never long enough.
We were living in a tiny apartment, going to school, working, and still relying on government assistance to buy food (definitely not my proudest moment)
I knew something had to change.. I saw people on Pinterest making a full-time income from home and thought, "I can do that!"
But reality hit hard. I wasted so much time doing everything wrong—getting lost in tech nightmares, second-guessing every step, and wondering if I was crazy for even trying.
I eventually figured it out, building a six-figure business from that messy start. But looking back, I can see the exact "overwhelm traps" that kept me stuck for months. If you’ve been dreaming of starting a blog but haven’t, I bet you’re caught in one of these right now.
Let’s have a real chat about what they are, and the simple fix for each.
Trap #1: The Tech Terror
This was my first and biggest nightmare. I thought the day after I started my blog, I'd make money. To my surprise, I couldn't even figure out how to make it look good, how bloggers made money to begin with, or how to install plug-ins.
I felt so stupid. I had zero technical skills, and every time I tried to do something, it felt like I was breaking it. I’d spend hours trying to get it to look halfway decent, only to end up more confused than when I started.
It feels so complicated that you do the easiest thing: nothing.
Trap #2: The "Blank Page" Panic
Once I finally got a semi-functional site, I hit the next wall. I’d sit down to write, and my mind would go completely blank. The questions would start swirling:
What do I even name this thing?
What should I write about?
What if I pick the wrong topic and waste months of my life?
This isn't just a lack of ideas; it's a paralyzing fear of making the wrong choice. So the dream of a blog stays locked in your head, because the blank page is just too intimidating.
Trap #3: The "But How Do I Make Money?" Mystery
Let's be honest: you want this blog to make a real difference in your life. You want to pay off debt, quit your 9-to-5, and have more time with your family. I wanted that, too. But the path from writing a post to actually earning an income felt like a total mystery.
I got so annoyed with all the bloggers talking about how much money they made, because none of them were actually teaching how to do it successfully. I spent weeks with my blog not monetized because I had no clue you actually had to set things up to get paid. This uncertainty makes the whole thing feel less like a business plan and more like a gamble
The Simple Fix I Wish I'd Had
During all that frustration, I promised myself that if I ever actually figured out how to have a profitable blog, I would help other people who wanted to find a way to make money from home.
And I did figure it out. By the 7th month of blogging, I had more than replaced my income and quit my job. By the 14th month, my husband left his job to work on the blog with me. Now, we live in our dream house, drive our dream car, and go on vacations I never thought possible.
