How I Used Pinterest to Go from a Micro Influencer Making $30k a year to making $200k per year.

I used to be the type of person that would scroll social media a lot, and occasionally I would see women talking about how being an influencer/blogger was their full-time job. For years when I saw posts like that, I seriously thought these influencers must be lying.

Then one day, after I realized nursing wasn’t going to work out for me, I was desperate. Even though I thought they were lying, I decided to give blogging and social media a try because it sounded like the best job in the world if it actually worked out. The worst that could happen is that I would discover that these women were, in fact, liars. So I started a blog and a Pinterest account.

During the first few months of blogging and pinning, I made basically nothing from it, but I was determined to make it work, so I didn’t give up.

Eventually, I started to gain a little bit of traffic and started making some money.

After nearly a year of blogging, I quit my job, but I was only making around $30,000 per year. It was enough to scrape by since my husband also worked, but It is definitely wasn’t going to allow me to buy my dream home and travel.

A few months later, after reading tons of books and taking more digital marketing classes than I ever thought existed, I created a Pinterest strategy that completely changed everything for me.

I went from making a little over $2,000 per month to making around $30,000 per month. I thought it was a complete fluke, and I was afraid to tell anyone about it. I am still kind of scared to tell people about this because this will change lives, but also it lets out my secrets and tips, which is scary!

I didn’t even want to talk to my husband about it at first because I thought talking about it was bad luck.

The next month the same thing happened.

And the month after that.

And the month after that month.

So finally, after being successful for a while, I have now decided to share my secrets with you guys because I want this strategy to change your life too.

The elements of my Pinterest Strategy:

1. Easy to Read Pins.

On Pinterest, you see so many cute pins, but oftentimes in those cute pins, people will use a hard-to-read cursive font.

When I first started, I was on a mission to have the cutest pins, but actually, I was creating pins that were hard to read.

I would use cursive fonts and different color text to match the background; they were just hard to read.

If you want to make money on Pinterest, you are going to have to create easy-to-read pins.

In my course Pin It To Win It, I walk you step-by-step through how I create my easy-to-read pins that get hundreds of thousands of people to click on them and buy from them.

It is a mix of what I have learned just being a blogger and what I learned about the science of colors as a marketing student. After I learned how to make pins in the way that I teach in Pin it To Win It, my business totally changed.

I didn’t realize what goes into the pin could make such a big difference in my income.

>>> HEADS UP: Pin it To Win Its enrollment is only open until I reach 100 students since everyone gets 30 days of one-on-one coaching with me, and I don’t want to spread myself too thin, and I am getting close to hitting that. This will be the final time I offer one-on-one text coaching and Pin it To Win it until I’m back from maternity leave sometime next year.

If you are interested in a step-by-step of how I used Pinterest to take my business from $30k to $400k per year, I highly recommend the program; it’s super tactical and will teach you exactly what I have done to grow this business through videos, a workbook, and worksheets. Plus, it comes with 30 days of one-on-one text coaching with me, so I can be there to help you along the way.

2. Pinterest Board Titles & Descriptions.

Who knew Pinterest board titles and descriptions mattered? When I first started using Pinterest for my blog, I would just make all my boards titled like this:

“My Ideal Spring Closet”

“- Dreamy Bedrooms-”

WRONG! Now I know your board titles and descriptions actually matter.

In one of my digital marketing classes, we talked about Pinterest, and after it, I went back and changed all my Pinterest board titles and descriptions. Then I started getting so much more traffic from Pinterest.

And more traffic meant a lot more income from affiliate links and selling my own products.

In Pin it To Win It, I walk you through the process of how exactly to pick the right Pinterest board name and board description so Pinterest knows who to show your pins to, which means more profit and traffic for you!

3. The Pinterest Creator Inclusion Fund.

Pinterest isn’t the most glamorous social media platform. People don’t clamor to be verified on Pinterest or to gain a huge following like people do with TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, which makes this one of the best-kept secrets in the game.

Pinterest will literally pay you to create content on their platform. You may know that YouTubers and TikTokers get paid to create content directly from the company, but did you know Pinterest will actually pay you to create content on their platform?

You have to apply to be part of the creator inclusion fund, and applications open and close periodically throughout the year.

The creator fund pays you based on the success of your content.

In Pin It To Win It lesson 3, I’ll walk you step-by-step through monetizing your Pinterest account, including the creator fund.

It’s been a game changer for so many people; it has allowed everyday people to become full-time influencers.

4. Pins That Link Directly to Affiliate and Product Links.

When I first joined Pinterest, I was just linking to my blog posts. I thought the goal of Pinterest was to drive traffic to your blog, and that’s it. I didn’t realize Pinterest could act kind of like a blog post or Instagram story, and you could actually link to things directly on your pins.

Now pinning with a blog is seriously powerful, but pinning directly to product links and affiliate links can be a game changer and offer a real income boost.

Especially if you’re creating easy-to-read, easy-to-find pins.

Of course, I will walk you through how to do this in Pin It to Win It, and I will also break down when you should pin a link directly and when you should pin a blog post with that link instead.

>>> Reminder: Pin it To Win Its enrollment is only open until I reach 100 students since everyone gets 30 days of one-on-one coaching with me, and I don’t want to spread myself too thin, and I am getting close to hitting that.

5. Blog Posts

I have found that telling a story and building a deeper connection is way more likely to get someone to buy your product than just taking them to a page where they can check out that product.

Especially when it is a new product or something people aren’t used to seeing, like a product from a small shop.

If you want to make money through Pinterest, I highly suggest having a blog, writing about the products you sell, or sharing the affiliate links you get from brands you love.

That way, you can share a story about the product or let people know why they should try it and what it has done for you. People are so much more likely to buy if you give them a genuine story.

A single Instagram story or TikTok doesn’t build the same trust a pin that links to a blog does. A pin that links to a blog post allows you to really talk the reader through something at their own pace. Instagram and TikTok are usually consumed with half the viewer’s attention. No one is clicking a pin and reading a blog post with half their attention.

I have noticed that if I write a blog post about an expensive or unknown product and then pin the blog post, I make way more affiliate income than I would if I just linked the pin directly to the product.

If you want to make money on Pinterest, I highly recommend having a blog.

If you want to start a blog and have no idea how to get started, I have a completely free email course that will walk you through the process step-by-step because I was totally lost when I started.

6. Running Ads Might Make You Money.

Okay, before you call me a liar, I’ll explain. Yes, running ads do cost money, but there isn’t a big risk involved because you control the budget.

I ran Pinterest ads at $0.10 per click, and from those ads, on average, I made $0.40 per click, which means I was making $0.30 profit from every click.

This means the more ads I run, the more money I make.

When I first started running ads to see if they worked, I would let Pinterest choose the budget for me based on their recommendations. BIG MISTAKE! I lost hundreds of dollars, and I thought, “That’s it! Ads don’t work!”

When you start an ad on Pinterest, they automatically suggest a budget and run it at that unless you know how to change it. Well, when I first started, I didn’t know that was a thing.

So I gave up on them and turned off all my ads for months! Until I learned more about advertising and learned exactly how to run the perfect ad on my perfect budget!

And here is the part where I say I teach you how to customize your ads, when to make changes, how to track your ads, and how to set the perfect budget for yourself and your business in Pin it To Win It because it’s true I do teach that stuff in Pin it To Win It.

And listen, I’m not some super guru who has some special touch that you don’t have, I am just a regular girl who started a blog and a T-shirt shop and didn’t give up even when everyone thought she was dumb for trying to build an internet business.

You can do this too! I’m not special!

That is why I am so passionate about what I teach in Pin it To Win It because I really believe that It can help anyone grow and scale their business to a level that will change their life forever.

>>>> Reminder: As I said a few times in this post, Pin It To Win It enrollment is about to close when I hit 100 people enrolled because I will be coaching everyone who joins personally to make sure they get the most out of the program. This will be the final time I offer one-on-one text coaching and Pin it To Win it until I’m back from maternity leave sometime next year.
